This is the story of communist China's Cultural Revolution as seen through the eyes of nine year old Ling. Ling's parents are both doctors, her father having been trained in Western medicine with colleagues in the US. When General Mao's political officers decide Ling's family and friends are part of the bourgeois society of old China they forcibly move into her family's home to spy on them. Ling is forced to grow up quickly as her once comfortable life drastically changes.
While this book is a work of fiction, it is largely based on the author's real childhood growing up in China. Check out her website to learn more http://www.yingc.com/
